Surgery Associate Professor/ Medical Director for Firefighters Burn UnitPosted: 3/1/2024

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and Regional One Health in Memphis, TN is accepting applications for an Academic Physician to serve as the Medical Director of the Firefighters Burn Unit. The Medical Director will lead a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, therapists, social workers, dieticians, and pharmacists They also must engage in the surgical education of general surgery residents, burn fellows and critical care fellows.

The Firefighters Burn Unit is the only American Burn Association (ABA)-verified burn center in the Mid-South region with its own burn emergency department and two burn operating rooms. As a busy regional center, 664 burn ED visits and 350 burn admissions were recorded in 2023.

There are opportunities for collaboration with either the Trauma Service in the Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional One Health for coverage of trauma and surgical critical care or the Plastic Surgery service for coverage of soft tissue reconstruction depending on the candidate's background and experience.
This is a full-time, non-tenure-track position and faculty rank is commensurate with experience and credentials.

The candidate hired will join a cohesive, multidisciplinary team of 3 burn surgeons, 9 intensivists and 8 advanced practice providers to complete the burn team.

Candidates can be either General Surgery/Critical Care or Plastic Surgery -trained, but all require burn fellowship training or experience. General Surgery - trained will be in UTROP; Plastic Surgery-trained will be in UCH.


The candidate must have:

  • Completed an accredited General Surgery residency program and be Board Eligible/Board Certified in General Surgery
  • Completed an accredited Surgical Critical Care fellowship and be Board Eligible/Board Certified in Surgical Critical Care
  • Completed an accredited Burn fellowship (or possess at least 5 years of prior burn practice experience) 

AND/OR

  • Completed an accredited Plastic Surgery training program Board Eligible/Board Certified in Plastic Surgery
  • Completed an accredited Burn fellowship (or possess at least 5 years of prior burn practice experience)
