It may come as a surprise to some that more than 30 million U.S. children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million of these athletes incur injuries each year - a fact that gains heightened relevance now that children have recently begun a fresh school year.
This installment of "CPT Corner" looks at how to accurately report injuries in the ICD-1o-CM coding system. In general, the ICD-10-CM coding system provides greater specificity than codes used in the ICD-9-CM system - and more than 50 percent of the total number of codes available in ICD-10-CM are designated as injury codes. This is due to the fact that injuries are now grouped by anatomic region (head, neck, thorax, etc.), rather than by category of injury (sprain, laceration, fracture, etc.) as they were in ICD-9.
