Abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR), a broad termused by general surgeons and plastic surgeons, encompasses amyriad of procedures used to repair hernias or abdominal wall defects. Over the last decade, multiple techniques have been popularized for reconstruction of these often-difficult clinical defects. Increased utilization of mesh for abdominal wall fascial reinforcement or as a form of hernia repair has, in turn, led to the proliferation of different forms of mesh that can be used in abdominal wall reconstruction. Studies have also focused on the anatomic location of mesh placement/reinforcement as it relates to hernia recurrence.
