You need to request a copy of you medical policy or go online to their website to find their guidelines for coverage of the surgery. If you state the name of the actual policy I can be more specific. You then need to make sure you meet each of their specific criteria. For example same plans require documentation of 3 months of non-surgical treatment of the pain. Your GP can help you get the required documentation. Once the criteria are met your plastic surgeon needs to write a preauthorization letter (including criteria met, your height/weight and amount of tissue to be removed) to your insurance company who must authorize the coverage if the criteria are met. Medicare does not preauthorize any surgery and MediCal does not cover breast reduction surgery. I hope this helps. If you then need help with the copays and deductibles there are financing options available to you.

You can call your insurance company and see if it is a covered benefit on your policy. If it is, you can see a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in your area and they can predetermine benefit coverage with your insurance company. The amount of breast tissue required to be taken off will not be your choice. If you would like to keep some breast tissue, you may choose a breast lift or cosmetic reduction. Care Credit is a great resource for payment options.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. I would first recommend reaching out to your insurance company to see if a breast reduction is a covered procedure. If it is, then set up a series of consultations with board certified plastic surgeons to discuss your candidacy and anticipated results.
