Do arnica&bromelain actually help with bruising? If so, what brands?

I've read that I'm supposed to start taking arnica and bromelain before surgery to reduce swelling.

Procedure: Rhinoplasty
Location: Hastings on Hudson, NY

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. In general arnica and bromelain are anecdotal in their use and as such there is no guarantee of improvement but they do not hurt the cause.

We have used the combination for many years and I think it makes a dramatic difference. Of course a lot depends on the gentleness of the surgeon. We use the Vita Medica brand, but there are probably others equally as good. The bromelain needs to be taken on an empty stomach to have anti-inflammatory effects. Good luck to you.

I started using them many years ago when I found that they dramatically reduced bruising, especially in facial procedures. I, therefore, started giving it for all my patients pre op.

Hello Hopeful. Yes arnica needs to be taken about 2 days prior surgery to help you reduce swelling and bruising. It really works, I do prescribe them to my patients.
