Ruptured saline breast implant

I had saline breast implants in 2008. My right one has ruptured. I’d prefer not to go back to the original surgeon.

What should I do? Does medical insurance cover the removal.

My original implants were way too big. I’m 60 now, and just want them out.

The manufacturer of some implants will provide a replacement. They do not cover surgeon fee, hospital fee or anesthesia fees. Removal of implants can be done with local standbye anesthesia at a reasonable cost. See an experienced board certified plastic surgeon in consultation. Good luck.

It is important for you to know that deflated saline implants without symptoms do not have to be removed. That being said, most women choose to have their deflated saline implants changed to another implant or removed (explanted). Many patients that choose to have their implant removed without replacement, often have a breast lift (mastopexy) at the same time to avoid overwhelming breast sagging. Unfortunately, in most cases, medical insurance has refused to cover this type of surgery. Your next step should be a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon of your choosing.

Removing implants is often a straight forward procedure. I don’t think insurance will cover the cost. Good luck with your decision to move forward.

Good day,

Dr. Monasebian, our Board Certified plastic surgeon would like to help. Depending on the manufacturer, breast implants may have come with a warranty. Your health insurance may help cover the costs if deemed medically necessary. We invite you to see Dr. Monasebian in his New York City office for a complimentary consultation if you are in the area. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Hi Carla,

Thank you for the question.

You can have both implants removed with minimal downtime. I do not believe insurance covers removal (explantation).

Please visit a board certified plastic surgeon.

All the best,

Dr. Khuthaila

Thank you for sharing your question. If they were placed for aesthetic purposes as compared to breast cancer or other reconstructive options, insurance will likely not cover removal. Depending on the style of saline implant they can often be removed with a small, in-office procedure which would limit costs. Hope this helps.

No, most insurances will not pay for saline implants to be removed, especially if you do not have breast cancer. My advice is go see Dr. Larry Weinstein who answered your question below. Of course you can just have them out, and you may be surprised you do not look that bad. Whether a mastopexy can or should be done can be answered by Dr. Weinstein.
