Dear Meghan,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. Based on your description, yes, I think that you are a good candidate for a breast reduction. Since you are under 18 years of age, you will need one of your parents to be present for your evaluation and treatment in order to consent for the procedure. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

Meghan- Even a 15 year old can have a breast reduction. Why should you suffer just because you are young and your breasts may grow some more after the surgery? A breast reduction with a good technique- ie the Hall-Findlay Short Scar Technique- with undoubtedly give you back pain relief. The biggest factor for additional increase in size over the ensuing years is your weight-you must keep your weight stable, and not gain A LOT of weight when you go to college. My consultations with teenage women and their mothers take at least 35-45 minutes. Seek out a board-certified surgeon who does all the above things to analyze your anatomy and candidacy, and you will be fine. Lori. L. Cherup, MD,FACS, Pittsburgh, PA
