The concept of skin tightening has been appealing and seemingly possible with the advent of ultrasonic assisted liposuction in the 1990's. Since then, there have been a number of devices that have been developed that incorporate some form of energy, which is applied internally or externally. These devices include ultrasound, laser light, radio frequency, and plasma gas, and they all have the same end effect: heating tissue. The biggest obstacle to permanent and meaningful skin tightening is the viability of the skin being tightened, specifically the ability of the skin to endure high temperatures without dying (literally being cooked!). Although some improvements in outcome have been observed, in general most people get minimal or temporary results and none offer tightening that would obviate the need for a skin removing surgery. This includes J plasma, AKA the flame thrower. In general, the thinner the skin, the more clinically apparent the tightening is achieved.

Dear Ally,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. Results with J Plasma appear to be good, but are unfortunately not permanent. However, given that the procedure is so straightforward, for many patients the trade-off is worth it. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!
