It sounds like you might be a candidate for a breast reduction. In order to determine the criteria for approval by your insurance company, you should contact them and find out what documentation you need to provide in order to seek approval of the procedure. You will also have to see a plastic surgeon to be properly evaluated. Best of luck

You describe symptoms common to women with large heavy breasts. I recommend you be evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon for possible breast reduction. The surgeon’s office should be able to contact your medical insurance company for criteria for coverage.

Dear Reanna, Breast reduction can help with neck, back, and shoulder pain associated with the weight of heavy breasts. You can use the "Find a Surgeon" link on this website to find ASPS-member plastic surgeons in your area. I do always warn younger women that breast reduction may limit your ability to breast feed, and that a pregnancy after breast reduction may result in breasts that are changed in volume (bigger or smaller) or droopy again. Ideally, women wait until after child-bearing to have their breasts reduced. But sometimes it's just not comfortable to wait. A board-certified plastic surgeon can evaluate you and let you know whether you qualify for a reduction that would be paid for by your insurer. Good luck!

Dear Reanna,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It sounds as though you may be an excellent candidate for a breast reduction. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

I understand your concerns about your breast and their potential contribution to your back and neck pain. Commonly, insurance carriers will pay for a breast reduction however you have to meet your insurance carrier's criteria for failed medical therapy before your insurance carrier will cover your breast reduction. However, some health insurance policies will exclude a breast reduction procedure and thus not cover a breast reduction surgery.Ideally, you should call your insurance carrier to discuss whether a breast reduction is a covered insurance benefit under your health policy. In the interim conservative measures such a weight loss, physical therapy and over the counter medical can temporarily ameliorate your back pain.
