A neck lift has an average downtime of about one month "social downtime" where you would not be attending regular social functions. You can expect swelling and bruising for up to two weeks, numbness of the skin for several weeks and incisions that will be raised for at least one month. Scars in the face and neck tend to heal very well but are still pink at three months, taking up to a full year to flatten and fade.

The fee for a neck lift will vary from surgeon to surgeon and also in different regions of the country. In general, a neck lift will likely result in a 7 to 10 day downtime period after surgery. Most patients require 10 days to 2 weeks to recover but will continue to heal over the next 3 to 6 months as the bruising and swelling goes away and the incisions heal, turn pink and then fade.

Thank you for your excellent question. In my practice, a neck lift is typically performed in an operating room under sedation and local anesthesia, but does not require general anesthesia. The procedure takes about 90 minutes, and typically involves a combination of liposuction, neck muscle tightening, and skin excision and tightening. Patients go home the same day, and return the first day for dressing change and drain removal. Bruising typically lasts 5-7 days, while some degree of swelling is noticeable for 2-4 weeks. That being the case, most patients return to work in about 5 - 7 days, but limit their activity and exposure for the full duration of recovery. The type of neck lift performed varies in complexity as it will also vary in cost. Sometimes the skin can be tightened non surgically to more invasive having your muscles tightened and skin cut out surgically. Meet with a few board certified plastic surgeons and share your concerns so they will make appropriate recommendations to specifically address what you want and give you an exact quote for the procedure that is recommended.
Downtime and cost depend on which type of neck lift (open or closed) is best one for you based on your anatomy. On average the downtime 2.5 weeks before returning to work or social engagements. This can be longer for more extensive work, or shorter for smaller neck lift procedures. Swelling in the lower face along the jawline is common and diminishes over 7-10 days. Open neck lift scars are placed around the ear and so are visible, whereas closed neck lift (best for minimal skin looseness) are hidden.
Cost depends on many factors: extent of surgery (sometimes a lower face lift is needed to ensure proper facial proportion), the surgeon's level of training and skill, location and travel costs. In Washington DC, the cost of surgery (including all hospital fees and pre/post care; excluding travel related cost) ranges from $9,000 to $18,000 with an average of $13,500.
