How much breast can be removed at one time?
I think in order to answer your question precisely, you would need to be seen in person. Most of the men that I see often do very well with just liposuction. However if they have a very glandular component to their chest and/or have a lot of loose skin, then they might need a more involved procedure requiring skin excision and glandexcision as well.
Hello Jerry and thank you for your question. It is best to seek an in-person consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. But in male breast reduction, the excess breast tissue can usually be addressed in one surgery. The excess skin can either be addressed surgically with excision at the same time or if appropriate, allowed to retract and then stage the skin excision with a second procedure. Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) is a common condition and can be treated surgically using a variety of techniques. There are generally three areas that need to be addressed - enlarged breast tissue, excess fatty tissue, and excess skin. In most cases the extra breast tissue is removed surgically through a small incision and the excess fatty tissue is removed and the chest contoured with liposuction. The skin will usually contract to some degree and for cases where there is a large excess of skin a second procedure several months down the road may be necessary to remove the extra skin to optimize your proportions. Almost all the breast tissue needs to be removed for great results. A small thin disc of tissue should be left directly beneath the nipple-areola in order to prevent retraction and a sunken nipple. Usually this tissue cannot be removed with just liposuction and must be excised directly. There is a variety of incisions that can be used for this. I favor the lateral pull through technique. Getting great results from gynecomastia correction is harder than it seems and I would advise taking your time in choosing your surgeon. Good luck.

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. Different surgeons prefer different techniques, but I try to remove all of the tissue at one sitting. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. There is no set upper limit. In male breast reduction surgery all of the abnormal tissue is removed. The technique depends on the extent of the over growth of tissue. It can be just liposuction if the main issue is excess fat. If there is gland tissue that needs to be removed this can be fished out through a small hole under the areola. In the case where there is excess skin and fat, the breast is removed with a larger incision. In any case, these surgeries address the issue in one visit to the OR. Best wishes!

The amount of breast tissue that can be removed will depend on the amount of excess fat, breast gland and breast skin that a patient has. Usually a lot of tissue can be removed. Often times I remove a majority of the breast gland except a small thin amount of tissue under the nipple(s).
