At what BMI can I get surgery? Currently 6'0" 320lbs.
Hello - another good question. Elective surgery such as this is usually postponed until the patient is at a healthy BMI <35. Some surgeons prefer the cut off of <32. This is due to the increased complications that are known to occur in patients with higher BMIs.

Many studies have shown that complication rates increase with higher BMI and co-existing medical conditions such as diabetes. It is important to have an in-person consultation with a board-certified ASPS member surgeon who is experienced with male breast reduction surgery. Your surgeon can review your history and risk factors and partner with you to develop a surgical plan that will optimize your results and minimize your risks. The answer will differ from surgeon to surgeon, but most will want patients at a BMI 30-35 and at a stable weight for 4-6 months prior to elective surgery. Hello and thank you for your excellent question. As noted above, many surgeons have BMI cutoffs between 31 - 35. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure.
