Hello - another good question. Elective surgery such as this is usually postponed until the patient is at a healthy BMI <35. Some surgeons prefer the cut off of <32. This is due to the increased complications that are known to occur in patients with higher BMIs.

Best of luck!

Thank you for your question and your commitment to doing your homework with ASPS. Many studies have shown that complication rates increase with higher BMI and co-existing medical conditions such as diabetes. It is important to have an in-person consultation with a board-certified ASPS member surgeon who is experienced with male breast reduction surgery. Your surgeon can review your history and risk factors and partner with you to develop a surgical plan that will optimize your results and minimize your risks. The answer will differ from surgeon to surgeon, but most will want patients at a BMI 30-35 and at a stable weight for 4-6 months prior to elective surgery. Best wishes on a great result and speedy recovery!

Dear Jerry,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. As noted above, many surgeons have BMI cutoffs between 31 - 35. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!
