How safe and effective is blepharoplasty?

For under the eye bags, can laser surgery be done? What are post op issues to deal with. What are risks? How natural do the results look?

Procedure: Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty as many other operations is an effective and safe operation. Generally the lower eyelid surgery is a bit more delicate than the upper as the issue can be the pull of the lower lid. Conservative approaches are usually best. For bags under the eyes, sometimes you can add some fillers below to help the look for most cases, removing or repositioning the fat in the bags works well followed by some fillers to make the area look better. At the same time a very conservative amount of skin can be removed or in some cases non surgical skin tightening can be done with chemicals, or lasers.

In safe hands this surgery is safe and effective. WE are learning in cosmetic surgery, combination treatments usually work best where you use various techniques to include some surgery, some skin improvement work and some volume work.

Having a blepharoplasty performed can give very natural results. Seeing you in person would be best to determine what would be the appropriate procedure for you

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Undereye surgery can achieve very natural results but will require surgery to address any fat pockets and excess skin. This relies on an in-person assessment so please see a series of surgeons in consultation to discuss.

Thanks for your question and doing your homework with ASPS member surgeons. Upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty are two very different operations. The upper eyelid procedure is consistently safe and reproducible whereas the lower blepharoplasty poses more risks and is a more intricate procedure. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, lower lid blepharoplasty is safe and produces excellent results. In very mild cases, some laser treatments can be effective in resurfacing and tightening the lower lid skin. It is always best to see a board-certified ASPS member surgeon in your area to develop a treatment plan best suited to your individual needs. Your plan may involve surgery, lasers, injectable filler, or a combination of those modalities. Best wishes on a great result and speedy recovery.

Dear Paul,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. The type of procedure used for a lower eyelid really depends on what you specifically need. But yes, in some cases, all you need is laser resurfacing. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!
