Is there an update to the 1/3k death rate published in the 2018 safety advisory by the Multi-Society Gluteal Fat Grafting Task Force? I have found new rates online (1/15k 2019, 1/20k 2020) but am unsure of which to trust. Is there an update with specifics to isolate augmentations via fat transfer only? What is the authoritative or a trusted source for mortality rates of cosmetic procedures?
The most recent rates that I’ve seen is closer to 1/30,000 which I believe is even less than tummy tucks. This is likely due to understanding of the anatomy and modifications in the technique to improve safety. After investigation, it is felt that placing fat in the subcutaneous fat layer and trying to avoid placing it into the muscle later seems the be safer. That’s actually how Ibakways performed it. Best of luck.
I attended the ASPS Spring Meeting (Virtual) March 20-21, 2021. J. Peter Rubin, MD, co-chair of the multi-society committee to study fat augmentation to the buttocks quoted the 1/15,000 figure for 2019 that Dr. Wallach references. That is the same risk as tummy tuck.
