I had gastric bypass in 2003. I was at 224 lbs. and am now almost 18 years out and can get any surgeon to look at he damage of the excess skin is causing. I was told that skin remover will be covered by Kaiser for bypass patients and no one else help
Happy to help; please call my clinic. We treat hundreds of weight loss patients every year.
I cannot say what your insurance company will or will not cover, as my practice is in Michigan. I know that BC/BS of Michigan will cover just the abdominoplasty because of the excoriation. It must be, however at least 1 year after a stable weight loss of over 100lb.
I have had many patients that need ancillary surgeries, such as arm lifts, thigh lifts and even facelifts. The patients pay out-of-pocket for those procedures.
The problem is that "coverage" doesn't mean coverage. If you insurance covers 1000 dollars and the cost is 5000 dollars, that is not coverage. unfortunately this is a common bait and switch by insurance companies.
Try to Save up and get the proper surgery.
Thank you for sharing your question. You may wish to reach out to Kaiser and see what plastic surgeons they have in network to refer you to, otherwise you can consider a self-pay model to other surgeons in your area. Best wishes and congratulations on your weight loss!
Unfortunately I work in Brazil. Surgery to remove excess skin is possible. In Brazil, the health plan covers this type of surgery.
