Sketchy Dr

How do I check to see if a Dr. is certified to do a procedure? Are there any circumstances when a non certified plastic surgery can do lipo? This office is promoting general surgeon by offering specials because he's just starting to do lipo but I wanna check him out first. Can any Dr do lipo?

Procedure: Liposuction
Location: Lumber City, GA

While any doctor can do lipo in their office, it does not mean that they are properly trained or qualified to do it. If someone is offering a "promotion" because they are "just starting to do it" then that should raise a few red flags (no experience, not properly trained). Find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon near you on this site: https://find.plasticsurgery.org/

Wow, I can’t believe anyone would consider that. If that same general surgeon said to you hey I was thinking about delivering your baby or doing an anesthetic on you why would anybody think that is a great idea. Medical procedures take years of training and then perfecting the artistry of that procedures such as liposuction also takes years. If that surgeon wants to do liposuction suction I would advise them to go through training program and I mentor ship until they are qualified to perform it on their own patients. I don’t think you should expect anything less!

I am actually seeing a gentleman this morning who did exactly that and he is now seeing several plastic surgeons on how we can fix a horrible liposuction job done by nontrained physician at sono Bello.

I would always suggest seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon, and expect to see photographs of their work. Best of luck! Dr. Boschert

Just because any doctor can do liposuction doesn't mean any doctor SHOULD do liposuction. See a board certified plastic surgeon. Listen to Dr. Gutowski--he's given you good advice.

Great question!! We get something like your concern allot in the office. The best way to describe what you are seeing is a NEW CONTRACTOR with limited experience starting out in a business endeavor. Would you let this individual or group replace the roof on your house?? What if the price is 50% or 75% less than, the other roof contractors in your community. When your roof leaks & the NEW CONTRACTOR is no where to be found what will it now cost you to get your roof fixed??

Be cautious of what appears to be too good to be true?? When it is something important like your body my suggestion is do it right. DO SOME HOMEWORK!!! Seek out a trained contractor with experience. These are ASPS Members right there in your community. Best,

Gary R Culbertson, MD, FACS

Sadly it is possible for a non plastic surgeon to perform liposuction and it is good that you recognized this inconsistency in the offices promotion. Ultimately you have to make the decision on whether this provider is good enough to manage you as a patient before, during, and after surgery knowing that their training did not involve liposuction, but it sounds like you already know the answer.

Really?! While any doctors license allows him to do liposuction, you need to be careful and check out his/her credentials, training & experience. You're considering having a general surgeon who is just starting out, offering a reduced “special” rate, operate on your body. That’s just too many red flags! Find a board certified plastic surgeon in your area who is trained in aesthetic surgery.

Dear Midlife,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

General surgery training does NOT include training on liposuction. This skill is specific to plastic surgery training. This means he or she did not get proper training/experience on how to do this procedure.

Sadly, it also happen here in my country. I suggest you find a board certified plastic surgeon to do liposuction. Only plastic surgeon are trained to do and to treat any complications that might happen in liposuction surgery.

You can check if the doctor has privileges to do liposuction in any reputed hospital. It is only Board Certified Plastic Surgeons who receive proper training in liposuction and other such procedures. The credentials can be checked with American Board of Medical Specialties as well as ASPS. Unfortunately, a lot of non Plastic Surgeons have started doing Cosmetic procedures often with little training or after a weekend course. Your safest bet would be a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon ,member of ASPS.
