Chin implant revision - do I need to take it out and wait 6 months?

I saw a plastic surgeon for a chin implant revision, and he said that I would need to remove the current one, wait at least 6 months, and then get a new one placed (no infection or anything, just changing the placement of the implant). Online I am seeing lots of surgeons say a replacement one can be done at the same time as the removal, as long as it’s secured with screws. Pros/cons of each way?

Procedure: Chin Surgery
Location: New York, NY

If here is no infection, I do not see any reason to wait. There are many advantages to exchange it at the time of explanation. The space is already there, there is less chance of distortion than if the tissues are allowed to contract to the original bone contour. It is only one surgery. Less psychological issues to deal with etc etc.

Without infection or an impending mucosal/skin erosion, I cannot think of a good reason to stage the implant exchange. Removal and simultaneous replacement is the way to go. See another surgeon and get another opinion.

Most chin implant revisions are due to malposition (crooked position or excess mobility). These implants are usually football shaped. When these older shaped implants are replaced with extended anatomic implants, a new pocket is made with increased security and better contour. The implant position is maintained with an appropriately made pocket. A screw is not needed. Your exact anatomy and surgical history may require other techniques.

Both ways are right.

If there is no evidence of infection, it makes more sense in replacing the implant in one operation!

If your surgeon has suggested so, there should be some reason, there is no harm in what he/she suggested. But considering putting the new implant in the same surgery, is easy as the space is already there, if needed can be extended too and its economical for you with a lot of psychological relief. consider meeting your surgeon again and discussing.
