How crucial are overlapping edges of cut skin?

The scar is 2 weeks old. After stitches were removed it became obvious that skin edges were overlapped. It resulted in skin step formation on the left side of scar. The suture have almost healed up. Will this stepping skin stay as it is? Is there any chance it could flatten? Should I go to surgeon and ask to redo it?

You just need a good scar revision procedure by a good plastic surgeon.

Give it time it most probably will get better with time. If in six months no change can revise the scar under local anesthesia in office.

Hi Andalay.

Admittedly, this doesn't look pretty right now, however it will get better over time. If you were my patient I would advise you to hold tight and let it heal for about 9 months to a year. If at that time you are unhappy with the appearance, then go for a scar revision. This time, go to a plastic surgeon, or a different plastic surgeon.

In the mean time, keep it out of the sun and get a good scar cream with silicone.

Don't stress, for now, it will get better, or can be redone.

That is not uncommon at all. You do not need a scar revision at all for at least one year. Most likely it will heal just fine if left alone. If you were my patient I would advise you to wear a small piece of tape over the scar for 4 weeks.
