Hooded eyelids

Ive always been really self conscious about my hooded eyes and I would like to have them corrected. How do I go about finding the right surgeonbc I dont want to end up blind or not be able to full close my eyes.

In order to evaluate your hooded eyelids, you would have to be seen in person. It is usually a fairly straightforward procedure that could even be done under local anesthesia. Best of luck.

A lot of people have hooded eyes, and the problem tends to get worse as we age. Getting rid of the hooding will "change your look"....think Renee Zelwegger, so you have to be ready for that change. All plastic surgeons are very careful to minimize the risk of complications after blepharoplasty. Inability to fully close the eyes (lagophthalmos) is a rare complication that results from taking too much skin out. Blindness, an even rarer complication, can result from bleeding causing pressure on the optic nerve. Consulting with an ASPS-member board-certified plastic surgeon is your first step in minimizing your risk of complications in this procedure. Having had this surgery myself for my naturally hooded eyes, I can tell you it made a very nice difference for me. The surgery was not painful, just a little tender and tight for a while, and I was back at work in three days with only mild bruising.

Hooded eyes can be caused by extra skin of the eyelids or brow ptosis. If your brow is under the superior orbital boney ridge, you may have brow ptosis which is improved with a brow lift. Extra skin of the upper eyelids is best treated under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. You will be asked to open and close your eyes during the procedure to ensure you can fully open and close your eyes. Good luck...

Your are not alone. You can have your procedure. All surgical procedures have risks. By asking question, this is the first step. Having a face-to-face consultation with a board certified ASPS member should be your next step. Hope this helps.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. An upper eyelid lift is a common procedure for patients as the skin around the eye is thin and tends to show age faster than other parts of the face. Though the best assessment can only be made with an in-person examination I would advocate seeing a series of ASPS board certified plastic surgeons in your area in consultation.

An upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the more common procedurs that I do. I usually do them under a local anesthetic with usually little downtime.

Dear Victoria,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!
