Since 50% of teenage boys develop some degree of gynecomastia during puberty and the vast majority resolves spontaneously, I recommend waiting until age 18. That way we avoid operating on boys who would get better on their own.

A 14 year old can qualify for surgery if he has had stable gynecomastia for 2-3 years with no visible signs of spontaneous regression. Waiting until he is 18 yo at which time the gyne will magically disappear overnight is simply archaic -- an old medical myth that is perpetuated ad nauseum. I see no reason for a teen boy to have to wait -- in vain -- until he is 18 yo and during which time he will be the subject of teasing, bullying, refraining from swimming shirtless, etc. I have operated on over 100 young boys over a span of 25 years with not one instance of gyne recurrence. It's time we changed our thinking about this!

If it stable and probably is, there is no need to wait. Visit a local ABPS certified plastic surgeon in El Paso for consultation.

A 14 year old if having gynaecomastia can be operated upon, however the risks of recurrence need to be mentioned. The reason to then take up surgery at this age is for psychological benefit
