Plastic Surgery for missing ear

I was born without a left ear. What are the chances I could get plastic surgery for it?

Procedure: Facelift

Dear Rhiannon,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. If you are missing an ear, your options include a prosthesis, versus using your own tissue for reconstruction. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable, and who has experience and training in addressing this difficult clinical issue. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Yes there are a number of staged plastic surgery techniques that can be used to reconstruct your missing ear. Seek out specialists in the field for the best long-term results.

Hi Rhiannon,

There are multiple options available for ear reconstruction including using your own tissue as well as a combination of your own tissue and specially designed products for making a new ear. As an alternative to reconstruction there are very realistic prosthesis available. Each reconstruction is individual and finding the right plastic surgeon is important. This is a commitment on the part of you and your surgeon to design a reconstructive plan that meets your specific needs. Make sure you are comfortable with who you choose, and I recommend seeing several board certified plastic surgeons to "feel them out." I hope this helps.
