recall Allegan

On 11/06/2022 my left breast implant from Allegan bursted. I contacted the Dr office where I had the work done and the DR who performed my surgery as retired so I set up an appointment with his partner Dr Moser. I went in to have the DR exam me and he said I need to have it fixed as soon as possible. That i have to pay to fix them.. because they are recalled isn't Allergen responsible

Procedure: Breast Reconstruction
Location: Hemet, CA

Textured implants have been recalled, not the smooth implants. Textured implants have a long history of success all over the world over more than thirty years and many patients therefore are comfortable keeping their implants. The issue may be how the implant operation was done and not the implants themselves

***Replacement is your decision based on the facts

In terms of cost, Allergen generally will provide new implants and if surgery was within ten years will help with the replacement costs. Check with Allergen.

Hope this helps

You did not mention how long you have had these implants in or what kind of implants they are. If they are silicone then it is recommended that you have them removed or replaced the sooner the better. If they are saline you could wait longer but I would not wait long. There was probably a guarantee in that Allergan would replace the implants at any time if they rupture. This will apply at this time but most people that had saline implants would opt to have silicone at this time and Allergan would not likely replace it with silicone. Allergan probably had a guarantee that would cover part of the expenses for facility fee for a small number of years but not the surgeon's fee. You can figure out what kind of implant you had and then check with Allergan to see what if any kind of assistance they would offer you if indeed this particular type of implant was recalled.

Thank you for your question! This is something I get asked all the time. The "recall" pertained to only devices that had not been implanted as of the the recall date. For devices that had been been implanted, the FDA asked to monitor for any signs of Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

Allergan Implants should carry a lifetime warranty where they will reimburse you for the cost of the implant only, but your surgeon's fee, anesthesia fee, and OR facility fee is normally not covered.

Best of luck and please make sure you are going to a board certified plastic surgeon.
