Feeling nipple again

Hello,

I had a breast augmentation back in 2020, I still haven't had much feeling in my right nipple. I was curious if I were to redo my implants by a different surgeon, would the feeling come back? Or is it completely gone?

Procedure: Breast Augmentation
Location: Pittsburgh, PA

You would and should have been informed during the informed consent process that augmentation mammoplasty surgery can interfere with Mammograms, lactation and SENSATION among other potential risks.

After two to three years I doubt that sensation will come back spontaneously or by another surgery.

My personal opinion is to advise the patient that if the sensation to the nipple is crucial to them then remove the implants and wait one year, if sensation comes back, great, if not then sensation will not be back to normal.

Loosing sensation is one of the possible complications from a breast augmentation. Does not happen often but it can happen and was probably in your operative permit or the information they gave you before the surgery. It usually returns after a year or so but after that long it is probably permanent. Replacing the implants or removing them is not going to make one bit of difference unfortunately.

As has already been said, breast augmentation can cause injury to the main sensory nerve to the nipple/areola. Fortunately there are accessory nerves to the area. From the way you phrased your question, I assume you have some sensation, just not what you would consider normal or reasonable. Any other surgery, including removal of the implants simply risks worsening the problem. Treatment is sensibility reeducation, which consists of frequently touching the area with different feeling objects until you can recognize them with your eyes closed. If you need help, see a hand therapist who deals with this on a regular basis.

Decrease sensation of nipples and areolar area is possible complication after breast implant and normally better in 8-12 months (Nerve healing process) and if you redo the operation again can't help for the sensation problem.
