I underwent a skin and nipple sparing mastectomy in December of 2021, 3 weeks radiation 4/2022. DIEF Flap reconstruction is recommended by 2 surgeons but am interested in fat transfer as I worry about the surgery itself and the mass amounts of scarring. I will also lose the skin and nipple. My other breast is a B. I've read much about how fat transfer can help. Thoughts/recommend?
The major problem is the radiation, radiated tissue may not be the best to have fat graft. That is why the two plastic surgeons wanted to give you the best option for successful breast reconstruction with a DIEP Flap
Hello, the most important thing is that you know that the surgical option that you have been offered is the healthiest for your recovery to be the most effective. Although a Lipo transfer sounds easier, it is not enough for an adequate reconstruction. You just have to be clear that you need to be safe for surgery and then make the decision to perform the surgical intervention.
