Breast reconstruction after mastectomy/expanders

I am having breast reconstruction after bilateral mastectomies and tissue expanders subpectoral. I previously had augmentation 28 years ago with meme textured implants. My breast were very soft and natural looking and were not ruptured. I am concerned about having a smooth implant when my tissue expanders are removed and the risk of capsular contracture.

Procedure: Breast Augmentation
Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Actually, the MEME impolants and any textured implants are under scrutiny and Allergan is not selling them in Europe at the moment so you may be better off having them removed like the recommendation is in Europe.

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. Regardless that you had textured implants in the past, you may still be best treated with a smooth implant now. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Although your previous implants were textured, there is no issue with placement of a smooth implant during your reconstruction. The risk of capsular contracture remains, as with the original augmentation, but discuss with your surgeon the details of your risks based on your specific case.
