Hello, just curious as to how and why a silicone implant ruptures in less than a year? I have experienced zero trauma to my breast and have slowly noticed changing over the past few months, I have now had an ultrasound and MRI due to having a big lump and it is confirmed that my implant is ruptured. I am devastated. Is my surgeon at fault? Opinions appreciated please
Hello, I will strongly advise the removal of both implants plus the capsule of your breast tissue around I. Let both sides to completely heal, and have an MRI of your breast area in order to evaluate your chest area.
All three American implant manufacturers warranty their implants. Your surgeon can notify the manufacturer and they will give you a new set for free. This early after implantation they will also very likely give you money to at least partially pay for the surgery to take out the ruptured implants and insert new ones.
The ruptured implants can be returned to the manufacturer to be analyzed.
If the rupture happens right away it could be surgeon related. If it happens months after surgery in the absence of trauma it is more likely implant manufacturer related.
You have a rupture because it can happen. Not very often but always possible. The implant is a device and any device has the possibility of failure. If your surgeon was an ABPS certified or eligible plastic surgeon I am sure that this was part of your informed consent for the operation and part of the implant literature that you signed. It is nobody's fault. All three major implant manufacturers will try to help you with the costs of replacement and will give you a new set of implants. It may not be all but will be significant. No one is more concerned with your well being as your original surgeon and they will do the most for you. Please see them.
