Hashimoto Hypothyroidism

I’m 57, 5’5, 159 and have had 2 c-sections and partial hysterectomy and a completed hysterectomy, all using the same incision scar. I have Hashimoto Hypothyroidism and wonder would this condition prohibits me from getting a mommy makeover that I have wanted for over 12 years. This question’s answer is my start towards getting a mommy makeover. Thank you.

In a perfect world, you should try and get your weight down under150 (BMI less than 25). That reduces your risk of postoperative complications significantly. Make sure your thyroid function is okay. Then go for it, girl!

A mommy makeover usually involves some type of breast surgery combined with abdominal surgery, in order to address the changes that pregnancy has had on those areas.

Your overall health including the thyroid condition should be assessed by your surgeon and medical doctors as one factor in the safety of undergoing the procedure. The facility (operating room), the anesthesia and surgeons expertise are other important factors in assessing the safety of the procedure for each patient on an individual basis. The thyroid condition per se shouldn’t necessarily be a contraindication to surgery.

It is quite possible for you to undergo the procedures that you desire. You are best to get medical clearance from your doctor prior to having surgery. Best of luck.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Assuming you are medically managed and optimized, your hypothyroidism should not preclude you from a mommy makeover. Hope this helps.

So long as your thyroiditis is controlled and your thyroid blood levels are normalized, your endocrinologist or primary care physician should clear you for surgery. The second consideration is body weight. If your plans include any major weight loss, it would be to your advantage to loose that prior to breast and body procedures. This both lowers your risks and improves your surgical results.

Assuming that your TSH is normal, you can definitely have your mommy make-over. Your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon will want to see your most recent TSH and will want to know the thyroid meds you are taking - e.g. synthroid, cytomel. If you've been waiting 12 years, there is no need to delay! Enjoy your result.

Hello Janice, and thank you for your question. As long as your medical conditions are controlled then you would be a candidate for a tummy tuck and or breast enhancement surgery (mommy makeover). I would start by consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and create a surgical plan. As long as your care is coordinated with the primary care or specialist that manages your hypothyroidism you should be able to proceed safely. Best of luck!

As long as your medical doctor says it is OK then you could have a mommy makeover!

Dear Janice,

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. Provided that your thyroid and other medical issues are well controlled, you should still be a candidate for an elective surgical procedure. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!
