Strattice Mesh removal with Explantation

I had breast revision surgery with placement of strattice mesh to prevent capsular contracture. I am 8 months post op and have contracture starting on right breast. I am considering explantation. Can the mesh be removed with the implants? Would leaving the mesh in be safe?

The Strattice can be removed or left in place. The decision should depend on whether it is involved by the capsule cotracture.

either way. You need to discuss this with your surgeon.

Hi there,

The mesh can often be removed at time of explanation. However, mesh removal will increase operative complexity, postoperative pain, and the likelihood for need for drain use after surgery. Leaving in the mesh should be safe. I would recommend discussing the pros and cons of these approaches with your surgeon.

All the best!

Your body is giving a foreign body reaction. It would be appropriate to remove the implant and mesh together with careful dissection. You can enlarge the breast with fat, which is your own tissue.
