I'm conflicted

I'm 19, 5'6" And a little over 200lbs. I am currently a cup size 38H and have consistent back/neck/shoulder pain. I have recently considered a reduction, but am not sure it'd be the right decision just yet. Should I tough it out and wait until I've had children, or would sooner be better than later? All the women in my family have large breast and haven't had work, should I be any different?

Procedure: Breast Reduction

That depends on how much pain you're having and how much this condition interferes with your activities of daily living. Every year a large number of patients have breast reduction surgery in their teens before they've had any children. You would not be the exception if you had the surgery at this time. If you have deep shoulder bra strap grooving and spinal column mal-alignment due to very large breasts having the surgery is a better option than waiting even if you need a revision after having children and breastfeeding.

Deciding to undergo a breast reduction is a personal choice. Many women have the surgery performed because of associated symptoms. Good luck.

Breast reduction patients are generally some of the happiest patients in plastic surgery. Even though the reduction means some incisions on the breasts, most women feel much better in terms of their posture, shoulder & neck discomfort, difficulty with exercise & getting clothes to fit, and general self-image. It is not uncommon to do this operation for young women, before they've had children. Try to get your weight under 200 lbs prior to surgery.

All the best,

Your age is irrelevant if you are having symptoms of pain and discomfort, essentially a loss of quality of life. Having a reduction sooner than later will lead to a higher quality of life and possibly lead to weight loss and improved health going forward. Best of luck!

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. If you are currently having severe symptoms, then it is entirely reasonable to have the procedure now. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

thank you for sharing your question. The decision to undergo a breast reduction based on your current symptoms is a personal one and needs to weigh your current discomfort with your anticipated changes with pregnancy. I would recommend seeing a series of specialists in consultation so that you can get the best treatment advice. With more knowledge of the operation, perhaps the decision will be made clear.

Any type of breast surgery is a personal decision. If the weight and even appearance of your breasts bother you more than scar would then you area candidate for a breast reduction.
