Is it safe to get breast implants, can they bust and harm you ?

I'm looking into getting breast implants and I'm curious if it's safe to get them and what you can do while having them like can you still go swimming? Or do activities such as sports, jumping off of things into the water ?

Procedure: Breast Augmentation
Location: Parkersburg, WV

Once your incisions are healed, your surgeon will advise you about your return to full activities. You'll still be able to swim and dive into the water, and do most sports once you reach that point.

Hello and thank you for your excellent question. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. In general, you will still be able to engage in all of your regular activities after breast implants are placed. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure. If you have any questions, call our office for assistance. Good luck!

Hello Brandi,

Breast augmentation with implants is a time tested procedure that has been done for decades. Its safety and effect are well known among the plastic surgery communities. No additional risk if you are talking about day to day activities and sport events as long as we are not talking about extreme activities like deep sea diving etc which no studies have been done for those. You definitely can resume all activities like swimming, cycling and all things you enjoy in life with breast implants.

That being said, breast implants are not life time device, so there is a chance in your life time that they might need to be replaced due to various reasons. To understand the potential reasons for replacement I would recommend you make an appointment to consult a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss in details about implants.

Hope that partly answered your questions,

It is extremely unlikely that your implants will bust and harm you. All the silicone implants are now considered cohesive gels which means, if there was a small tear in the capsule, the material would likely stay confined to the implant or stay very close to it. No studies have shown harmful effects from implants that i am aware of.

i let my patients get back to full activities quite quickly. one of my patients after a breast augmentation, 5 weeks later, did a half Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13 mile run)!!!

These are common questions that I often get from women considering breast augmentation. The goal of the operation is to give you the enhancement that you are looking for with minimal downtime and no long term limitation in daily activities. I ask my patients to avoid swimming for 6 weeks. This is mostly because keeping the incisions dry allows them to heal better. You know how your fingertips get swollen and wrinkled in water? Your new incisions can also swell like that and prevent you from getting the best result. Overall, after 4-6weeks, you can return to normal activity with no limitations.

Hello Brandi,

Once you have fully healed, there should be no problem with swimming, active water sports, etc. It is important to closely follow your surgeon's instructions as to when it is safe to resume activity. Be sure to seek an ASPS surgeon from this site near you. Breast implants are very safe and are one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the USA.

Hi. Still today implant pacement is the safest and most successful technique for Breast Augmentation. After the recovery period which lasts about 4 to 6 weeks, your can do any activity you like. If they are SIlicone Cohesive Gel no rupture an harm is expected.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Once fully healed a patient with breast implants can return to all previous activities including weight training, rock climbing, swimming, etc. The risk of rupture is extremely low but is an excellent point to bring up during your consultation. Hope this helps.

Hello!

That’s great that you decided on breast implants! Just remember that once you get these devices you have to take care of yourself. That being said you must give yourself at least a month before strenuous activity. Give us successful patients give them selves up at least one week off of driving, have help with children, and follow directions exactly!

Hope this helps!

I have breast implants, and 2 weeks after surgery I jogged, did yoga except for down dog, ballet, swam laps, and lifted arm weights. Yes, you can do sports, but your wounds have to be really healed, and you can't stress your pectoralis muscles for about 4 weeks, until the implants are set in position. There are all kinds of athletes that have implants. I strongly recommend using cohesive gel implants for their lasting durability.
