I wanted to get some additional information of how to get health insurance to pay for Panniculectomy.
I have read most health insurance want to see a massive weight loss (e.g., over 100 lbs). I recently lost 30lbs. However, my bigger loss was my body fat percentage. When I started I was at approximately 30%, today I am around 16-17.
Thoughts??
Great question. Panniculectomy is an excellent procedure to remove excess skin on the lower abdomen. Each insurance carrier has specific guidelines to help you attain coverage. If you meet the criteria of your carrier; it may be covered.
Excellent question and we get asked all the time. Coverage largely depends on your insurance plan and each plan has different criteria. You need to call member services and ask them for the policy document for your particular plan. Also, some plans have what is called a plan exclusion that they will not cover it not matter what.
A panniculectomy is also very different from an abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty entails tightening the muscle ( rectus plication) as well as liposuction of the flanks (love handles), repositioning the belly button. A panniculectomy only involves skin removal and these additional components of an abdominoplasty are considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance.
Best wishes to get your surgery covered!
