Umbilical hernia, is a frequent abdominal wall defect as common as 1:1,000 frequent in population.

Usually, we do a Mayo technique repair and recurrence is less than 0.5 %.

Revisional or secundary hernioplasty is mandatory for this case.

Is the scar above the navel a result of the previous hernia repair? It is not the usual way to access the area to repair a hernia. The two most common methods are the periumbilical approach (incision on half of the perimeter of the navel) or the laparoscopic (three small incisions on the abdominal wall). I prefer the periumbilical approach since hernias are usually small at this age and scars are practically invisible once healing is completed. An in-person consultation or an MRI can confirm if the hernia is still there and therefore justify a new surgical procedure to correct it. Your daughter may surely need another surgery.
