Damaged fingernail cuticle repair?

I damaged my fingernail cuticle when I was a child. A piece of glass sliced through it and it remained damaged after healing. Now that I am older it is causing frequent nail breakage and I often experience sharp pains in the area or numbness in my finger tip. Is there a surgery that could be performed to remedy this?

Procedure: General Reconstruction
Location: Atlanta, GA

The scar from the original wound can be revised by excising this, then advancing the adjacent margins of the cuticle and repairing this by sutures. I believe that this would be more likely to successfully heal and result in smooth nail plate regrowth if the nail is removed in conjunction with the repair. I'd be cautiously optimistic that this procedure would lead to resolution of the pain and numbness you describe.

There is a scar in the germinal plate which is where the nail grows. This needs to be removed and the cuticle gap repaired. The cuticle is the easier repair, Repair of the germinal plate is not always effective

If you want to do something for the look of it you may end up worse with a split nail deformity. If it’s the pain then a kenalog or steroid injection may help soften the scar tissue
