I'm 26, 122 lbs with type 1 diabetes and my a1c is 7.5 and currently working on getting it lower. I want to do liposuction on my stomach to get the shape I want. Will I be a good candidate and what are the risk ?
Diabetics are at higher risk of infection and delay in healing. Getting your A1C below 7 decreases , but does not complement eliminate the risk.
The main risk of surgery in a diabetic is wound healing and infection risk. The risk of the goes lower with a lower a1c. 7.5 is considered uncontrolled diabetes. Best to get it under 7 to lower your risk of wound complications . I have successfully operated on type 1 diabetics and they have worked with their endocrinologist to get their diabetes under control, especially with an insulin pump.
Best wishes
Diabetes is not going to be a problem as long as it is well controlled and you have the clearance of your endocrinologist. To be a good candidate your have to meet certain criteria and this is better done by an in person consultation with a local ABPS certified or eligible plastic surgeon.
As stated here diabetics are at an increased risk of complications with surgery. The better your diabetes is controlled the safer the procedure becomes. It's great you are working on lowering your A1c and below 7 your risk becomes much less. Once you and your endocrinologist feel it is safe you can have the surgery. See several plastic surgeons to get a feel for what you are trying to achieve and whether or not it is realistic. Good luck and hopefully you will find the right doctor to do your surgery when the time comes. Dr. Schuster in Boca Raton.
Proper control of diabetes by your physician before during and after liposuction will significantly decrease the risk
