Scar

Hi, I am looking into getting a breast reduction as I am very insecure about my breasts, and I was wondering how long does it take for the scars to fade? And also, does the nipple lose it’s sensitivity after the surgery? And finally, what are my chances of still being able to breast feed after the surgery?

I am 140 pounds, and I have around 34 D breasts.

Procedure: Breast Reduction

The final scar appearance is dependent on tension of closure and patient genetics. There is no way to predict this before surgery. Some people actually regain sensitivity to the nipple once the nerve is no longer stretched by the weight of the breast. All consent forms say there may be future problems breast feeding but the incidence is quite rare though it is probably more common with free nipple grafts.

Scars will continue to soften and fade in color for over a year and although there is a risk of losing nipple sensitivity, or the ability to breastfeed, it is fortunately small.

Scars maturation proceeds at differing rates between patients. Some scars look good at 6 weeks while others may take a year or longer to look their best. The majority of patients maintain nipple sensitivity and can be expected to successfully breast feed after surgery. Your surgeon should be able to help set expectations in regards to these issues. Best of luck

I always recommend my ScaRxtape for my patients to try and limit the scarring but the scars may take even up to year plus to fade! Breast feeding is still possible in about 50% of cases as is nipple sensation. Recovery is about two weeks.
