Brest reduction at 16

I am going to be turning 16 soon and would love to have a Brest reduction. I am 5’7 and 170lbs and uncomfortably wear a 34DD. I work out daily playing two sports. I have a lot of neck pain and back pain which causes me problems running and enjoying the active life I have. My size also effects my confidence and ability find swimsuits and bras. My parents r ok with me getting the surgery. Am I able?

Procedure: Breast Reduction
Location: norcross, GA

You would need to be seen in person to be properly evaluated. It sounds by your description that you are a reasonable candidate. As long as you are of adult size and are no longer growing. In addition, if you are not an emancipated minor then you would need your parents’ permission. Good luck!

hello and welcome to this forum. I have been performing breast reduction surgery for the past 30 years and I can honestly say that BR patients are my happiest of all. My youngest was 14; my oldest was 82. You sound incredibly mature, well informed, intelligent, responsible and mature. In my opinion, you would be an excellent candidate for a BR and it will be a true life changing experience for you. Good luck and well wishes in your future endeavors.

Greetings!

Breast reduction surgery can be performed on women your age, especially with your varied complaints about adversity you have about your breasts. However, most women are not fully developed at age 16 and some doctors defer the surgery to an older age. If you do proceed now, just be aware that your breasts may continue to develop and get large again, necessitating further surgery down the road. Glad to hear your parent's support.

I suggest you seek out a board certified plastic surgeon who can do a thorough evaluation and advise you as to your particular options.

You sound like a good candidate for breast reduction which will make your breasts smaller (about half their size) and lift them as well. Your age of 16 is acceptable if you have parental support and you feel mature enough to handle the decision to have surgery. My young patients truly benefit in terms of comfort, relief of neck and shoulder pain, better self esteem and simpler things like being able to wear tops and clothes and bathing suits that 16 year olds wear. Make sure you find a surgeon you are comfortable with and discuss the possibility of having children and being able to breast feed down the road. It's a long way off, but important to discuss before the surgery. With todays techniques you have a very high likelihood of being able to breast feed later. Breast reduction changes lives! I wish you the best. Insurance may or may not cover this at your age but you sound like you will benefit from this surgery.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Assuming your breasts have fully developed, it sounds as if a breast reduction would be an excellent treatment option to help with your neck and back discomfort, as well as difficulty finding appropriately sized garments. Be sure to see a series of ASPS board certified plastic surgeons in consultation. Best wishes!
