Recovery

I had asked a previous question about eligibility for a Breast reduction and got uplifting answers! My other question is if I would need to be admitted to the hospital and stay as an inpatient surgery? I’ve head of this happening because of my younger age (16) and issues with bleeding from past surgeries. I might just have bad luck but could i be staying in the hospital afterwards?

Reasons to keep you overnight could include length or complexity of the procedure, a need to monitor you afterward such as if you had unexpected bleeding or problems recovering from anesthesia, pain control or any doubt that you could receive adequate care for the first evening after surgery outside of a hospital setting. These decisions might be made proactively, that is before your surgery or afterwards if necessary. Best wishes.

For most breast reduction patients they go home the same day as surgery but depending on your medical history and other considerations a hospital stay may be needed.

For young healthy patients I will typically send those patients home the day of surgery after a breast reduction. I have no problem keeping patients overnight who I may have concerns about bleeding or postop pain. Good luck with your surgery and it will be well worth it!

In our practice, breast reduction patients do not have any routine overnight hospital stay. Your surgeon may have individual concerns for you as a patient, considering your medical history, and could adapt the plan accordingly. Discuss these and other questions with him or her during your consultation. Breast reduction is an extremely rewarding procedure which brings great lifestyle and personal satisfaction. Enjoy.

Almost all of my patients go home the same day of their surgery after breast reduction. That being said, if you have had bleeding or postoperative pain control issues previously, it might be a good idea to consider an overnight stay for closer monitoring. This will be an important discussion for you to evaluate with your surgeon prior to the operation.
