How expensive is it?

Hello, I have gynecomastia and I hate it! It is something very embarrassing and I want it gone. My question is what is the typical cost to get rid of it? And do I need to get referred by a doctor in order to get surgery.

Procedure: Breast Reduction
Location: Carmichael, CA

It depends upon what is needed to correct your condition. Sometimes liposuction is adequate, at times more extensive surgery is required. You should consult with a board certified plastic surgeon in your area to explore costs.

Your out of pocket cost will depend on the surgery performed and whether or not your health insurance covers it. Some policies don't cover it all. Others cover surgery for only grade 3 or 4 severity. More severe cases require some skin removal in addition to removal of tissue deep to the skin and therefore the surgical and operating room costs are higher. Whether you need a referral also depends on your insurance plan. Some only cover specialists after referral from a GP others allow you to self refer.

You should consult with one of our ASPS member board certified plastic surgeons to see what your options might be. Sometimes gynecomastia is covered under health insurance so you would only be responsible for your co-pay and deductible. If you don't have insurance or it isn't a covered benefit, then many plastic surgeons have their own office operating room where they perform surgery far more economically than in a hospital. You should call customer service for your health insurance to see if gynecomastia surgery is covered, and if it is, ask for a list of plastic surgeons in your plan. Then you will have to google or make a few phone calls to find an in-network board-certified plastic surgeon to care for you (sometimes dermatologists and ENTs are listed under plastic surgery). If it's not covered, use the Find-a-Surgeon tool on this website to locate ASPS member surgeons near you. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Depending on age and severity of condition your insurance plan may cover the costs, but you would need to discuss with them directly. If deemed aesthetic in nature costs will vary in the 5-7K range for most patients including the costs of anesthesia and facility. This varies across the country so the best estimate is only obtained after an in-person consultation with an ASPS surgeon.

The costs will vary by location and a number of other factors. Obtain one or more consultations with board certified plastic surgeons to hear from them how they would treat your gynecomastia and costs associated with these treatments. We have found this to be a life changing procedure for our patients.

Hello Max, it does change mens' lives to have the size of their breast reduced. Surgery is very effective and may be surgical excision of the gland or liposuction combined with surgical excision. A compression vest afterward is important. Cost will vary widely, but in the Washington DC area, it is about $5,000. You should be able to get a written estimate at an inperson consultation. If you smoke, quit! Best wishes to you.

If it is limited to just gland under the nipple, this can be done through a limited incision under the areola. If done under local, the price is around $3500. In the case of greater breast growth, skin and fat must be removed and the areola reduced. This requires general anesthesia, and the price is $8,500. Insurance generally does not cover this procedure. Thanks for the question!

I treat gynecomastia either with liposuctioon alone or with combination of excision and lipo and the cost depends on what is done. I would be happy to see you for a complimentary consultation.
