Teaching hospital vs private surgery center

FDL tummy tuck with a concurrent BTL.

Options 1: have my surgery done with Baylor College of Medicine with the attending and have several residents in the or at the VA Hospital in Houston

Option 2: Go to a private surgery center and have it done with just my two doctors.

I will not pay anything for options 1 but was also given option 2.

Pro and con to teaching hospital surgery?

Procedure: Tummy Tuck
Location: Houston, TX

Over the years of my training, I have worked in several VA hospitals and I also happen to be a veteran. Go to the private surgery center. It will be worth the added expense.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. It is a difficult question to face and I would recommend ignoring the cost aspect, focusing instead on the physicians with whom you have interacted and feel the most comfortable with achieving your goals and who have taken a personal interest in your well-being.

Not all teaching hospitals are the same. This is Baylor. Repeat, B A Y L O R! Option 1. I am a veteran, 10 years United States Marines.

As a Houston physician, Baylor is excellent and has wonderful residents and physicians. A private surgery center will be more comfortable and personal. It really depends on your financial constraints and how comfortable you are with being seen and examined by a larger group of medical staff at the VA vs a private surgery center.

Hello, patients are often very divided on how they feel about treatment at academic hospitals. On the one hand, you typically have excellent surgeons who are at the forefront of their fields, on the other hand, you may be taken care of/operated on by residents and fellows. Remember, all residents are supervised by the attending surgeon and you are that surgeon's patient so he/she has full responsibility for your care and your outcome!

Honestly, it's a very personal decision. Go with what you feel most comfortable with. You can always ask the surgeon if you could meet the resident or if he/she endorses that resident.
