Growth deformity caused by full leg cast on right side?

Around my 11th birthday I injured my right knee, requiring an orthopedic procedure. I was placed in a full-leg cast to heal for about 8 weeks. The cast reached 4 to 6 inches short of my pubic bone. I was still growing. Upon removal, the flesh below the cast line retained a compressed appearance. My upper thighs remain asymmetrical, with an extra large right saddlebag. How can I correct it?

Procedure: General Reconstruction

Rose, that is a great question. There is a lot that can be done. Your insurance should pay for this, if you have good insurance. You need a scar release and fat grafting. I have done it many times in situations of trauma like this. Go see a good plastic surgeon in Gainesville.

Liposuction and fat transfer can be a solution for trauma induced deformities. I've had good success with using fat transfer into areas of tissue loss due to trauma. I have corrected seatbelt injuries which are the would be a similar injury to what you had. After the fat transfer I created a splint to make the transferred fat heel to the correct shape and it worked better than I could've hoped.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question. There are options at improving upon your legs appearance and it sounds as if liposuction of the right saddle bag with transfer to the area of indentation would be a great start. Talk to a series of surgeons in Gainesville and the surrounding area to get a series of recommendations.

Deformities caused by medical issues such as yours should be a covered benefit under your insurance. But if you don't want to play their game and jump through the many hoops they have, you can always do this cosmetically. It is likely that some kind of liposuction/fat grafting procedure could help improve your contours ans symmetry but only a face to face exam would allow one to know for sure if that would work.
