What procedure and specific questions should I ask my PS regarding a RUPTURED recalled textured Allergan Implant? I developed profound painful asymmetry and MRI revealed rupture and benign lesion etiology. Would it be medically necessary to have capsulectomy? Can biopsy or neddle aspiration be done w/rupture? Struggling with insurance.
Allergan can provide support to help with costs most likely. Your board certified plastic surgeon should be able to navigate this. Whether your surgery would be covered by insurance often depends on the company and your specific policy as well as whether the implants were placed for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes. Ruptured implants should be removed but the decision on capsulectomy depends on several factors in conjunction with your surgeon. The details as to whether the rupture is "intracapsular" or "extracapsular" also matter. We would need more information about the biopsy needing to be performed and its location relative to the implant as to whether this can be done effectively. There is no specific increased danger of a biopsy in the setting of an already ruptured implant.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Any board certified plastic surgeon should be able to assist you with the appropriate workup and treatment based on your specific case. Further work up on the benign lesion, cause of rupture, and ancillary tests needs to be performed but most likely a capsulectomy will need to be entertained.

Allergan provides some but not all of the funds necessary to remove the implant. I would highly recommend doing a capsulectomy at the same time if they are not being replaced
