The 2023 In-Service Examination provides the most current information on the core curriculum of plastic surgery. The exam offers surgeons in practice the opportunity to challenge themselves and assess their knowledge of the entire scope of plastic surgery. Relevant questions in basic science will be included in each of the five categories. Surgeons have the flexibility to take two, three, four or five modules of this exam, with each section scored independently. A minimum passing score of 30% has been set for this activity.
The exam is broken down into sections covering the following:
- Core Surgical Principles
- Identify the most up-to-date information on the core curriculum of plastic surgery
- Assess your base knowledge in the five clinical component areas
- Establish a benchmark for areas of focus needing further concentrated educational efforts
- Attend appropriate educational activities based upon self-assessment evaluation

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) designates this enduring material activity for a maximum of 37.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Of the 37.5 credits, 7.5 credits have been identified as being applicable to Patient Safety.
Scoring and Credits
ASPS is required to set a minimum performance level on activities such as the In-Service Exam and may only award AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ to those learners who meet the minimum performance level. Credits are based on the estimated completion and review time for the examination process and the achievement of a minimum performance level. In order to receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, your exam must be submitted by the exam closing time of 11:59 PM local time on June 7, 2023.
Based on a review of past In-Service Exams, the 2023 In-Service Committee has set the minimum performance level at 30 percent. Learners who do not meet the 30 percent minimum may take a second attempt at the exam to acquire a passing score.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) requires all instructors, planners, reviewers, managers and other individuals in a position to control or influence the content of an activity to disclose all relevant financial relationships or affiliations. All identified conflicts of interest must be resolved and the educational content thoroughly vetted by ASPS for fair balance, scientific objectivity and appropriateness of patient care recommendations. ASPS also requires faculty/authors to disclose when off-label/unapproved uses of product are discussed in a CME activity or included in related materials.
